Mary in this painting is Mary, Queen of Heaven crowned with twelve stars (Rev. 12:1).  Catholics believe she was assumed into Heaven and was crowned queen among the saints whose prayerful intercession is very powerful.  Her smile and open arms welcome us as a perfect mother who would lovingly welcome us home.
